Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat many gynecologic conditions. During the procedure the uterus and fallopian tubes are removed. Some women may require removal of the ovaries, but this is not a standard part of the hysterectomy and will be discussed prior to any procedure to determine what is the best option for each woman.
There are many approaches to accomplish the surgery including robotic assisted laparoscopy, vaginal and abdominal. With the advancement of new technologies, many women are able to recover faster and return to work or activities sooner. Dr. Dooley will discuss with you all of the surgical options and main considerations for choosing the appropriate procedure for you. Just like all treatments and surgeries, hysterectomies have risks and benefits that should be carefully considered.
The long term satisfaction for women who have had a hysterectomy is very high. Sexual function for the majority of women is unchanged or even improved.
The most common question Dr. Dooley finds herself being asked is whether the ovaries should be removed or not. This is something that is decided on a case by case basis and Dr. Dooley will take the time to thoroughly discuss this with you in your consultation appointment.
