Well Woman Exam
Also referred to as an annual exam, a well woman exam is a comprehensive evaluation of your current health with an emphasis on maintaining or improving your current health. For some women this may include: a breast exam, a pelvic exam, as well as a pap smear and or HPV testing. You may also discuss your family’s medical history and any current health issues or concerns. If you are having significant gynecologic issues, you may be asked to schedule further testing or visits to address these specific issues in a comprehensive fashion.
Breast exams are an integral part of gynecological exams. Research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that breast cancer is the second most commonly occurring cancer in women. Gynecologists can help with early detection of breast cancer. During your exam, your gynecologist will check for lumps or other abnormalities in the breast area that might be associated with breast cancer. If there are any concerns, a mammogram can be scheduled for further diagnosis. Many women are advised to have a yearly screening mammogram. The timing of this is based on your personal and family history.
